Think about this for a moment: How many hours of sleep do you get every day? If you get less than seven to eight hours, then you should be alarmed. Sleep can affect many aspects of our health, including our bones. A recent study conducted by researchers from the Medical College of Wisconsin revealed that lack of sleep can affect bone density. How did they get this surprising conclusion?
Experimentation
The researchers did an experiment on rats. Sleep restriction was done on rats for 72 days. What the researchers observed was a cessation in bone formation. Sleep-restricted rats were found to have a decrease in bone mineral density, which is an indication of osteoporosis. Other than that, the researchers found that the fats in the rats’ respective bone marrows decreased. Platelet-generating cells also doubled in number, which is another indication of lessened flexibility.
Analysis
According to Doctor Carol Everson, the one who spearheaded the research said that if we place the results of the experiment on rats to the context of humans, then inadequate sleep can greatly affect bone repair and formation. Supposedly, our body gets a repair or remodelling whenever we sleep because every day, we face different physical activities that cause the wear and tear of our bones. And if we fail to get enough sleep, we can face lots of consequences in our body, not only in bone formation.
